Why kissing is important
Kissing, such a simple and common gesture in a couple’s relationship, is not only the universal language of affection for one’s partner, but also offers multiple health benefits.
Well, there is even a science dedicated to the study of kissing, philemanthology. Leaving through the research of philanthropology, I found out a lot of interesting things about kissing that we want to share with you:
- And the animals kiss in a different way, obviously. Elephants use the horn for this gesture; dogs, chimpanzees, parrots do it too in different ways.
- Depending on the culture, people use kissing to express: love, affection, passion, friendship, to greet, or simply to show respect for someone.
- There are also cultures in which kissing is unknown. In nineteenth-century Africa, for example, when a British explorer tried to kiss a native woman, she became very frightened, thinking he wanted to eat her.
- People who kiss daily live five years longer than those who do not.
- In the Greco-Roman world, the person who initiated the kiss was considered to have questionable values.
I was talking earlier about the health benefits of kissing. Among the most relevant, we list:
- Helps reduce stress by lowering the level of cortisol (the stress hormone).
- Increases the concentration of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin (hormones of happiness, well-being and passion).
- It helps to firm the skin and reduce wrinkles, as for a kiss we use about 30 muscles of the face and up to 110 muscles of the body.
- Strengthens the immune system.
- Accelerates heart rate.
- Lowers cholesterol levels in the body.

Kissing is a good way to find the right partner. Substances contained in saliva decrease or increase the attraction towards a person, that’s why sometimes we like a person, but after the moment of the kiss we realize that we don’t have that chemistry with that person. In contrast, kissing can connect partners on a deeper level.
So, kissing is essential in your relationship, remaining the main personal and intimate contact or emotional connection you have with your partner. During the kiss, your emotions are fully involved.
Beyond the above, kissing is super fun. Remember the beginnings of your relationship when you couldn’t get enough of kissing each other. Those strong sensations can come back anytime, if you don’t forget to kiss your partner every day.
