How to choose the sweetest watermelon

What could be more hydrating, sweeter and cooler in summer than a cold slice of watermelon. It’s just that sometimes it happens to us that our expectations are deceived, in the sense that we wake up at home, after leaving the fruit cold for several hours, that it is not exactly as we expected it to be, sometimes it lacks the specific taste, sometimes worn or unripe.

In order to make the right choice and in the future to eliminate the risk of spending money on a product that, although at first sight leaves your mouth watering, then reaches the trash, we will list below some tips on how to choose the right watermelon:

  • The ripe melon weighs more, although at first glance it may seem smaller than other melons. Since watermelon is 90% water, the more ripe it is, the more water it will contain, so it will be harder.
  • The peel of the melon must be firm, firm. If you press it with your fingers and it seems as soft as possible, you risk that watermelon being passed. Also, if the watermelon does not have that white-yellow spot on the skin, which forms on the side where the fruit sat on the ground, it means that it was harvested before ripening, thus risking taking an unripe watermelon.
  • If you notice the watermelon stalk, it is clear that the fruit is unripe. The watermelon stalk dries naturally when the watermelon is ripe enough.
  • The peel of the watermelon must also be round, without deformations and have a waxy appearance. When you “knock” on its shell, a firm sound must be heard. If you hear that specific empty echo, the watermelon is already gone.
  • Do not buy a watermelon cracked or with a stopper made beforehand, as you risk taking an altered product.
  • A watermelon with woody branches on the skin will be very sweet. This means that the bees have pollinated the flower several times, so do not set it aside.
  • Elongated melons are juicier, while round melons are sweeter.

In the hope that you will heed our advice, we remind you that no matter what type of watermelon you hit, this is a healthy and balanced choice for your diet in the summer season.
